Design Characteristics
While the southeastern region of China was never known for its shadow puppetry, it continues to be known for Chinese marionette theatre and other forms of folk puppetry. The little shadow puppetry that was performed there in the last few centuries has a more modern aesthetic – often resembling animation – and less emphasis on the making craft. No cuts are carved into the leather figures save the outline of the pieces themselves. The beauty is in the painting.
This style eventually found its way to Taiwan in the latter half of the 1900s and continues to be performed there today.
